One Gulf Coast afternoon is the whole argument
A roof's job ends at the eave. Everything after that is the gutter's problem, and in this part of Louisiana the volume arriving in a single afternoon is not a small problem. Water that is not carried away lands at the base of the wall, which is the one place a house least wants it.
The signs are in a sequence. Gutters leaking or overflowing during a rainstorm. Rot or water damage appearing on siding or brick. Soil washing out of the landscaping along the drip line. Paint peeling, or rust showing on the gutter itself. Then, last, leaks in a basement or at the foundation.
By the time the fifth one has happened, the repair is no longer a gutter repair. That is the reason to act on the first two.

A gutter hangs off the fascia, immediately below the drip edge the roof terminates in. Those two details have to agree with each other or water finds the gap between them and runs behind the gutter instead of into it. When one contractor sets the drip edge and a different one hangs the gutter, that is exactly where it tends to go wrong.

What it protects, in order
Foundation first, siding second, landscaping third. Every one of those is more expensive to put right than the gutter that would have prevented it, and the foundation by a wide margin.
Gutters also frequently belong in the same conversation as a roof replacement. One of our customers had a long fight with her insurer over a new roof, and when it was finally approved the gutters went on in the same project rather than as a second job a year later.
