What FORTIFIED roofing actually changes, edge by edge
Wind never lifts a roof from the middle. It finds an edge. FORTIFIED is written against that sequence.

If you have been quoted for a roof in Louisiana in the last few years, somebody has probably said the word FORTIFIED to you. It is worth understanding what it actually is, because it is not a product you can buy and it is not a grade of shingle. It is a construction standard developed by the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety, and it describes how the roof is built rather than what it is built from.
That distinction matters. Two roofs can use the identical shingle off the identical pallet and perform completely differently in a hurricane, because almost everything that decides the outcome happens underneath, at the edges and at the fasteners.
Wind starts at the edge and works inward
A roof does not fail in the middle of a plane. Wind moving across a roof creates lift, and it needs somewhere to get underneath to convert that lift into damage. The place it gets underneath is an edge: the eave, the rake, the first course of shingles. Once it has a corner, it has leverage, and it peels backwards from there.
This is why storm damage so often looks like a strip taken off one edge of a roof while the rest looks untouched. It is not random. It is the same physics every time.
The four changes
A FORTIFIED roof makes four specific changes, and every one of them is invisible once the roof is finished, which is exactly why it needs to be specified before the job rather than hoped for afterwards.
- Stronger edges: a broader drip edge with a fully adhered starter strip, so there is no loose lip for wind to catch
- A sealed roof deck: the deck itself is sealed, so the house keeps being protected even if the shingles above are compromised
- Better attachment: ring-shank nails driven in a reinforced pattern, instead of smooth nails
- Insurance premium savings: up to 40% off the premium with many insurers
The sealed deck is the one homeowners underrate. In a serious storm, losing shingles is survivable. What ruins a house is the water that pours in through a bare deck for the next eighteen hours while the rain is still going and no roofer in the parish can get to you. A sealed deck buys you that window.
Ring-shank nails are the other quiet one. A smooth nail resists withdrawal by friction alone, and repeated wind loading works it loose over time. A ring-shank nail has rings along the shank that bite into the wood fibre, and it holds through cycles that back a smooth nail out.
Three classifications, and why you should ask
FORTIFIED has three classifications: Hurricane, High Wind and Professional. A contractor can be certified in one and not the others, and a homeowner usually does not find out which one their roofer could actually deliver until the specification is being written and something quietly changes.
Cypress Roofing is certified in all three, certified by the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety. It is a fair question to ask any roofer who raises the subject, and a short answer either way.
The insurance conversation, honestly
Many insurers discount the premium on a FORTIFIED roof by up to 40%. Read that carefully, because the careful words are doing real work: up to, and many insurers rather than all of them. The actual figure depends on your carrier, your policy and your parish, and no roofer is in a position to promise you a number.
What we would suggest is this. Before you finalise the specification for a replacement, call your own insurer and ask two questions: whether they offer a FORTIFIED discount, and what documentation they need to apply it. Getting that answer first can change whether the upgrade pays for itself, and it takes one phone call.
Whether it is worth it on your house
The signs that a roof is approaching replacement are the same whether or not you go FORTIFIED: visible wear or damage, leaks or water damage showing up inside, energy bills climbing because the insulation is no longer doing its job, or simply a roof over twenty years old.
If you are replacing anyway, the marginal question is narrow. You are already paying for a tear-off, a deck inspection and a full re-cover. The FORTIFIED upgrade is a specification change on work that is happening regardless, and in a state that recorded thirty named storms in a single season it is not a theoretical benefit.

The roof is the easy part. The claim is where months disappear, and it is usually the same three places.
